Volunteer Tree Plant - Minesing Wetlands

Location: Wildlife Viewing Platform, Concession 2, Angus

​Volunteers Needed!

Join the Nature Conservancy of Canada and NVCA to plant trees along the Nottawasaga River in the Minesing Wetlands. Forest cover in the Minesing Wetlands has been lost due to changing land use, tree disease and severe storms, and we need your help to restore this significant habitat. 

The Minesing Wetlands live up to their name, so be prepared to get wet! 

There will be a 30 minute hike over possibly flooded trail to reach the planting site.

NVCA Annual Tree Sale
Date: Saturday, May 13, 2017 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Utopia & Wasaga Beach

Join us for the annual NVCA Arbor Day Tree Sale!

Trees are sold in bundles of 10 for $20 to $30.  Some individual trees may be available (separately price). 

This year's sale features a variety of trees and shrubs, including white pine; Norway and white spruce; white cedar;  poplar; nannyberry; American highbush cranberry; sumac; red and bur oak; black walnut; and sycamore. Please note that not all species will be available at both locations.

Two Locations:
  • Utopia - Tiffin Centre for Conservation (map), about 10 minutes west of Barrie.  Cash or credit card payments only.
  • Wasaga BeachBlueberry Trail at the Nordic Centre parking lot off River Road West (map). Cash payments only. Thanks to the Ganaraska Hiking Club of Wasaga Beach for hosting this event!

Volunteer Tree Plant - Minesing @ Willow Creek

Volunteers Needed!

Join the Nature Conservancy of Canada and NVCA to plant trees along the Nottawasaga River in the Minesing Wetlands. Once grown, these trees will provide habitat to forest birds and other wildlife, shade and cool the river, stabilize the riverbanks and reduce erosion.

Nature Days for Homeschoolers

Location: tree planting site in the watershed

Join us for a day of learning and exploring the natural world - all ages welcome!

This month: Spring Tree Plant - Join NVCA's stewardship team for a day of planting trees and rehabilitating wildlife habitat. Take a guided hike exploring the ecological significance of the area.

Boarders Away 2017
Date: Saturday, May 27, 2017 9:00 AM - Sunday, May 28, 2017 12:00 PM
Location: Fort Willow Conservation Area, Grenfel

​Historic re-enactors from across the province will make camp at Fort Willow for a weekend of drills, artillery (cannon), and small arms (musket/sword) training.  

The public is welcome to view the training taking place from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, May 28. Regular conservation area parking fees apply.

Please note - There will be muskets and cannons firing (sudden, loud noises) at this event.

Minesing Wetlands BioBlitz

​Join the Friends of Minesing Wetlands, NVCA, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Ducks Unlimited Canada for the first annual Minesing Wetlands BioBlitz!

What is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is a volunteer-based biological inventory of a natural area. Participants include local scientists, professional naturalists, amateur enthusiasts and members of the general public.

The goal of the BioBlitz is to identify as many species as possible in a set amount of time. Guided walks, canoe trips, workshops and other educational activities are among some of the activities being planned. 

Do I need to be an expert to participate?

Absolutely not! This is an all-ages, all-skill-levels event. As a volunteer, you will have a hands-on opportunity to learn more about the natural world while contributing to citizen science and environmental stewardship.

Edible Wild Walk
Date: Saturday, June 10, 2017 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Location to be confirmed, but in southwest Simcoe County

Karen Stephenson (www.ediblewildfood.com) will identify plants and describe their edible and medicinal values, ending off with a wild-plant beverage (bring your own mug). Karen is a certified Master Naturalist who has been a forager for over ten years and a wild food educator for five.

Cost: $20. Pay at event. Cash only.

Registration required, spaces are limited to ensure a high quality experience for all participants.

Festival at Fort Willow

Come to Fort Willow and witness life as it was during the early 19th century with hands-on demonstrations for all ages!

  • military, First Nations and voyageur encampments
  • cannon and musket firing demonstrations
  • re-enactors and authentic demonstrations of medicine, sewing, cooking, weaving, blacksmithing and more
  • children’s activities including musket drills, candle making and beading

FREE ADMISSION. Food and beverages will be available for sale.  Cash only please.​
