What is GIS?

GIS (Geographical Information Systems) is comprised of hardware, software and procedures designed to support the efficient capture, management, manipulation, analysis, modeling and display of spatially referenced data for solving complex planning and management issues.

The Database is the intelligence and power behind the GIS system. 
The GIS database stores information about what each feature is, where each feature is and how the features are related.

A GIS can answer:
-Location: What is at…?
-Condition: Where it is…?
-Trend:  What has changed since…?
-Pattern: What spatial patterns exist?
-Modeling: What if…?

GIS is not simply a tool for making maps, however, it is a good tool for making maps to visually represent analysis results and spatial relationships between features.
