"Trees for Streams" Volunteer Plant

Volunteers Needed!

This is one of a series of spring tree plants hosted by NVCA's partner, the South S​imcoe Streams Network.

All tree plants include an orientation and refreshments, and are eligible for high school student community hours. Individuals and groups (schools, community organizations) welcome!

Location: This plant is taking place on the Pine River, just north of County Rd 5 on Concession 3, near Everett (map​). Field parking on the west side of Concession 3.

Family Nature Days - Predators & Prey

Late May ProgramExplore the forest ecosystem at the Tiffin Centre and find the hidden geocached treasures, then become part of the ecosystem as part of a predator-prey role playing game.

Wildflower Identification Walk - DSLSN

Location: Little Tract, Dufferin County Forest, 938130 Airport Rd (west side, about 15 km north of Highway 89, near Mansfield)

Are trilliums the only wildflowers you can identify? And is that only because they are the provincial flower? 

Join local life-long (since she was five!) terrestrial and aquatic botanist Dawn Renfrew on a leisurely walk through the Little Tract of the Dufferin County Forest to identify spring wildflowers. ​​

​Cost: $10. Pre-registration required, spaces are limited to ensure a high quality experience for all participants. To register, contact Caroline Mach at 519-941-1114 ext. 4011.

Edible Wild Walk - DSLSN
Date: Saturday, June 8, 2019 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Tottenham Tract, Simcoe County Forest (6631 2nd Line New Tecumseth, about 1.5 km north of Highway 9, south of Tottenham)

Karen Stephenson (www.ediblewildfood.com) will identify plants and describe their edible and medicinal values, ending off with a wild-plant beverage (bring your own mug). Karen is a certified Master Naturalist who has been a forager for over ten years and a wild food educator for five. 

Cost: $20. Pre-registration required, spaces are limited to ensure a high quality experience for all participants.

June Program - Spend the day on Papa Bear Pond!  Learn about the plants, bugs, fish and other animals that make their home in the pond, build a model sailboat, then take to the water and try your hand paddling a canoe.

National Historic Places Day - Willow Depot

Join NVCA and the Friends of Historic Fort Willow for the 2019 Canada Historic Places Day.

Fort Willow Conservation Area is recognized as a national historic site​ for its role in the development of Simcoe County and our nation. During the War of 1812, the site was a strategic storage depot known as "Willow Depot," located at the end of the Nine Mile Portage from Kempenfelt​ Bay.

On July 6, re-enactors in period dress will be on-site to answer your questions about the fort and its role in the history of Canada.

New this year, the Ontario Wood Carvers' Association from the Barrie area and across Ontario will be joining us for a fun day of woodcarving. There will be carvings on display, demonstrations of carving techniques and the opportunity to give it a try yourself. 

NVCA is waiving the parking fee at Fort Willow for the day, so come and enjoy!

Please note that Fort Willow features an accessible trail, a lovely picnic pavilion, and outhouses, but does not have running water or food/beverage available for sale.
